Homebuilt System Problem

Hi all,

I am experiencing a pretty big problem with my homebuilt system. I built the system my high school freshman year back in 2009, and it has not had any problems until about six months ago. I left the system at home when I went to college, and during Winter Break I was told that it had shut down and wont turn on. I am guessing that either the PSU or the motherboard is dead. When I turn it on now, there is an incredibly quiet/high-pitched sound but nothing happens. Have any of you dealt with this sort of issue? If you need any additional information, please let me know!

I think you're right. I hope it didn't take many parts with it. I use the Rosewill RP600V2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182032)

Can you open the case and ID the source of the sound?
Does anything else happen at all? Do any indicator lights go on? See anything at all on the screen? Any fans go on?
Any information about what might have caused it to shut down before it would not start?

What are the primary system components?

The faint sound is coming from the PSU area. Nothing turns on when I try to power it up. My family had been using the computer while I was away. They're not very knowledgeable of how to take care of a PC. My guess is that they left it on for long periods of time, shut it off suddenly, and didn't take care of the inside. I know the last one is true because when I got back and opened up the PC, the inside was very dusty.
For the core components:

PSU is above
GIGABYTE EP45-UD3P Mobo
Intel dual core CPU
nvidia 9800 gtx+

The PSU is out of warranty so the best course of action would be to replace the unit and see if the system turns on.

Just a thought if that doesnt work because this has happened to me twice now. It could be the power button. I am not sure if I am like one of the only one cursed with this but two of the times I left a computer untouched for 6+ months and then tried to turn those units on, my power button was failing for some reason. Had to get a new casing for them but my PSU was making a sound too. So I figured it had to work. Otherwise maybe try flipping the switch on the PSU.

It certainly sounds like a PSU issue if the PSU makes noice when turned on - indicating that it is getting power - but fails to turn anything else on. Theoretically , it could be problem with the power going to the computer, although this is very unlikely and easily checked by plugging another power hungry device into the same socket or moving the PC to an outlet on another, known-good, circuit.
Do you or a friend have another good PSU that you can use to test your system? It would only need to be 400w or more, given the system you listed above and assuming no other power-hungary accessories, and you could simply switch connectors to test - without removing any components.
