I currently have 4 sticks of ram

1 GB, 1GB, 2GB, 2GB. (6144 MB DDR3 Dual Channel)

I want to get rid of the two 1GB's and add in 2 x 4GB or 2 X 8 GB?

This is my first time upgrading my ram. Can my computer handle a 2 x 4 GB or maybe even a 2 x 8 GB?

Is there anything i need to be aware of when upgrading ram?
Links to ram recommendations please :)

i live in the US

You could put up to 16GB of Ram into your motherboard (4 sticks of 4GB each). When installing RAM be sure you place them in pairs which allows them to run at optimal capacity. Installing in pairs means to place the pairs of RAM in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4.

Microcenter.com usually has some pretty good sales when it comes to RAM or crucial.com

Hello @Tommy :hello:

The exact model number of your Dell Desktop is "Studio XPS 7100". I concur with what @steevo117 mentioned. Maximum your system supports is 16GB. It has 4 slots and max per slot it takes is 4GB and thus eliminates the possibility of installing 8GB modules.

Since, you are in US, I would suggest you to try memorystock.com for good value ram at the correct price - Dell Studio XPS 7100 memory

Cheers :sol:
