When I started up my computer today a message came up (the box name was "Virus Error) stating something around the lines of "Windows has detected that you are using a pirated version of the OS and must format the drive. Yes - shut down and format now or No - format on shutdown later."

I selected No and haven't shut down my computer since for fear that it will format my hard drive. Here is the thing: MY OS WAS INSTALLED COMPLETELY LEGALLY! I bought the disc from Microsoft and installed it from that, and I still have the disc. What the hell is going on? Is this some kind of prank? I haven't gotten any messages or notices since then, nothing at all. I haven't been doing ANYTHING illegal on my computer at all either. I haven't even installed anything on my computer recently either, all I've been doing is essays and playing Battlefield 3 for the past few weeks and then all of a sudden the messages pops up when I log in today. What the hell is going on?

I think its some sort of virus or malware. You need to do a scan. I dont think Windows will tell you its pirated it will just say your version is not genuine so its probably a virus.
