So i needed to reinstall mac os mountain lion because my mac was slow, and there was a bunch of old shit that i didnt feel like going through and deleting manually. So i booted and held command r, erased my hard drive through disk utility, and selected reinstall os. I typed my apple account and got the error in the title. I have emailed apple, and have a carbon copy clone of my previous install so im not dead in the water, but if anyone has any insight it would be appreciated.

Here is the thing. This is the second thread in which you ask about pirated software. So far you are breaking three forum rules:

1. You are hijacking an old thread.

2. You are posting multiple threads about the same topic.

3. You are asking (again) for help with pirated software.

To break one forum rule is forgivable, to break two is a little foolish, to break three is asking for a permanent ban from the forums. You do have another option: Mac Lion is very cheap - buy it you cheapskate.

I've used the CMD-R method to re-install OS X many times, also using the Recovery Partition's Disk Utility. I don't remember ever having to input my Apple ID and pw for the (re-) installation to proceed, so let me ask you, at what point does it prompt you to do so?

Tip: I always have the system download the latest version of OS X during the process of re-installing the OS, so as to have a completely fresh copy.

Tip #2: Alternative to the CMD-R method, you could also make yourself a bootable recovery USB drive and install OS X from that, which is insanely fast if your system has USB 3.0.

Hope this helps.

im trying to install mountain lion which has no disk. i am actually typing this on my macbook because im running off my external hard drive. i have my old snow leopard disk, but dont want to have to upgrade from snow leopard on up. when i used the CMD-R method i was taken to a screen with 4 options. there was a restore from something backup, reinstall lion (oddly not mountain lion), launch disk utility, and something else. I deleting macintosh hd, went to reinstall lion, and because its an os not on a disk it had me log on to my apple id to re download it. i got the error message and am now running on an even slower backup lol
also thanks for the reply

Do you actually own Lion (on your mac id) or did your computer ship with ML. Even if you have bought ML on your Mac ID it wouldnt let you install lion if you didn't own it separately as its a different OS.

I dont own lion. My mac shipped with snow leopard, and i upgraded to mountain lion. It turns out that it will only give me the option for lion, which i dont own, so im going to have to update through my old snow leopard disk. Thanks for your help, for some reason it didnt occur to me that lion wasnt the same as mountain lion in this instance. i assumed they would give me the option to upgrade to the latest os, but it only gives me the option for lion.
