First boot attempt started and ended in half a second (turned on then turned off). Unplugged everything from the board except the motherboard power and it turned on, plugged in everything except usb and hdaudio and everything boots up but there is no video or beep.

Help greatly appreciated

Solution
On some power supply's the eight pin connector can come apart into two four pin connectors. If it a non snap able plug just plug in half of the cable for now they do make eight pin to four pin adaptores.

The minimum you'll need to get the beep (POST) is:

1- Power supply
2- Motherboard
3- RAM
4- CPU
5- Video card (some motherboard have integrated video)

I don't see anything wrong with your hardware selection. Make sure you plug in all of the power supply cables. There is often a 6 pin cable that goes up near the CPU that often gets overlooked.

Ok that one I haven't plugged in but the problem is my motherboard has a 4 pin connection and my PSU has a 8 pins connector...

...does this mean I need to order a new psu or is there something I can do with what I have?

At first I didn't see it but thankfully mine is the type that splits and I don't need an adapter, thanks system booted up with everything connected.

Though for anyone else who has this problem it seems to only like the connector to be plugged in from a specific angle otherwise there won't be a change in the boot. It took me a few tries and it booted up slightly different on each try until it finally went to dos :D
