Hey everyone I really need some assistance here. For the last 2 or 3 weeks my computer was doing some heavy lockups. The computer freezes and 1/5 of the time comes up with windows explorer has stopped responding. I have reformatted 3 times now to no avail. Theres no newer hardware placed into the pc it was running fine for a few months since upgrading my gpu then this huge wave of issues occured now. Ill mabye get a blue screen once every 15 crashes and it crashed about 2-5 times a day. Not good I know. During my second reformat It locked up on me hard right after starting up I thought it might have been a coincidence since It was under heavy updating / downloading program stress but I believe it was just a normal lockup. If theres any information I can try to get you I will its a fresh pc right now doing windows updates and windows explorer just crashed so I decided I really need help. Im guessing its my harddrive but I have no clue. It automatically ran a diskcheck after this latest crash aswell.

Chris post your video card and power supply info. It could be a weak power supply. If your mb has onboard video unplug the gpu and run with onboard gpu see if the errors stop. For the hard drive download hdtune and read the drive smart info it tell you if there any warnings. Also drive vendors have free test tools. Also make a bootable memtest86 disk and run memtest overnight to see if there any ram issues. The last is heat or lose parts. Open your case kill the dust bunnies in it and with the power unplugged check that the ram and video card are seated. With the pc on check that the CPU and gpu fans are moving.

My gpu is a 7970 from gigabyte. my power supply is a 750w from cooler master. I dont believe my mb has onboard video. im currently finishing up the windows updates then ill get to the hdtune and update it here. I just opened it up today and made sure everything was solid and it was, I removed a dead ssd and a capture card I wasnt using. All fans are running, top, back, front, heatsync and the 3 on the gpu.

**EDIT** While the updates for windows were happening I clicked internet explorer to go get the program recommended to check my hdd, the computer locked up. I feel it locks up when under too much use? Mabye a memory issue? My memory are 2x4gb 1600 ripjaw x's they are in their slots but could be the issue? Advice?

I put in a very old hdd I had around the house in an older pc. Its incredibly laggy cause it was filled with stupid shit 10 years ago but for 20 minutes now no lockup ill test it for an hour or two and if theres non il lassume that hdd is my issue.
