This is probably due do failure in display driver or the video card would have been damaged. so update the drivers
OR have you try the simple method to change the display setting by using these steps.
- Right click 0n desktop
- then click on properties
- Go to desktop tab
- On the right side there is a drop down menu name with position
click on it and select the stretch
- Now click on Ok
