I'm doing some upgrades to my gaming desktop and want to decide...should I push more air into the case... or exhaust it, out for the best cooling results.

All this while making sure I'm keeping the right in/out pressure maintained in the case.

Right now...My Antec 300 illusion has (2)120mm TriCool front fans (set to intake outside air), (1) 120mm TriCool rear (set to exhaust hot case air) fan and (1) 140mm TriCool top fan (set to exhaust hot case air).

I have (1) unused 120mm fan spot on the side of the case. Am I better off setting a fan to draw in more air or push it out?

Part of the reason I want to do some upgrading is because my graphics card. My HD 6950 is soon going to be cooled with an Arctic Cooling Accelero III. I'm also adding a modified Thermalright VRM-R4 heatsink, which will be cooled by a 80mm fan.

I thought a side fan (located in close proximity to my 6950) might help exhaust all that hot air moving around in there. Then... I could also add one of those 120mm filters, to help keep dirt out.

.... But instead, maybe I need to put more air inside the case. I suppose I could just try it both ways and look at my temperatures and go with the best result but having read about maintaining proper case pressure I am hoping for some advice on by best way to do this.

I have tried it both ways with my Antec 300 and got better cooling results with the fan on the side blowing into the case only around 4c difference.

Thanks for the reply. Can I ask how you got the temperature reading, to see it dropped in temp? Did you go by the reading of your CPU, GPU or some other means, to see it dropped by 4c?

I was going to try a few methods to check for a temp drop..such as CPU-Z or my multimeter (which has a temp probe) or my hand held Infrared Thermometer.

The temp. reading of the cpu was from ASUS probe, a program that came with the motherboard driver disk. The fan I used was a PWM fan from Gelid FN-PX12-15 .

My new fan just arrived today so I'll try it both ways and then post a follow up with the readings. I think blowing in is the best bet.

Hopefully both my (140mm and 120mm) fans will be enough to draw all that hot air out... fast enough to keep up with (3) 120mm intake fans I'll be running.
