After setting up my projector for my new "man cave", I have always watched movies by hooking up my laptop via HDMI and playing .mkv files that I ripped. This workes just fine but a bit of a hassle to move my laptop, plug in the power supply, then the HDMI every time I want to watch a movie. So I had this old HP desktop gathering dust in the corner and I was wondering if I could upgrade that just to hold and play my movie/TV collection. It would be permananty stationed in the cave and I was wondering if it had the juce to pump out full 1080p at 60+fps. Here are the specs:

HP Pavilion 7855 Desktop

- CPU: Intel Pentium (R) III / 1 GHz Processor
- Ram: 128mb originally already upgraded to full 512mb
- Graphics: Intel 810E Integrated Graphics

I am planning on upgrading the following:
- I have 2 empty bays and since my motherboard will only take IDE hard drives, I'll order 2 400GB drives in addition to the 60GB drive that I currently have.
- Graphics card. Since I only have PCI slots, I needed to find a decent graphics card that has HDMI output capabilities. This seems good.
- Finally my PSU is a measly 180W so I'll upgrade to this one.

My main questions are will my upgrades (A) work with this system and (B) be powerful enough to play 1080P smoothly.

Thanks!

Short Answer: No.

Long Answer: No way in hell.

That CPU will never be able to play 1080p or even 720p.

I recommend investing the money in an AMD APU build or an Intel NUC.

Movies are typically filmed at 24fps (there are very few exceptions to this rule, and I can only think of one film that isn't filmed at 24fps - The Hobbit, filmed at 48fps), so you won't need to be able to do 60fps :p
But no, it will not handle it.
Sorry bud :(
EDIT: Unfortunately, this is not a Great Success  (I'm sorry, I could not resist)

Darn, it's really that weak? Even with the new Graphics card? I knew even light gaming was out of the question but I thought for sure the old fart could play some videos...

Ah well was hoping for a "Great Success" haha.

I attempted to play a 1920x1040 movie today on a full 1080p TV with my Pentium 4 and Geforce 8400 1GB (Actually not a bad card for the price by any means. Plays older games great) and it struggled sooo much. It was through USB 2.0, but it never played smoothly for more than a few seconds. Grant it I am also running Windows 7 on that machine with 1GB of ram, but still...

Yes, I've tried running HD files off an external, there is some lag, but it's watchable. Weird, my laptop plays 10GB files just fine, and it's a 5 year old laptop...
