Recently built myself a new PC running Windows 8, and plan on doing something for my GF soon as well to replace her aging desktop, which may go at any moment now.

Space being a limited issue, and her wanting a laptop as well, I was thinking of getting her a good laptop, and set it up with an external display, the Dell U2412M.

She has an iPad & iPhone, both of which she loves, and has been interested in a MBP or MBA, so I was thinking of getting one. She doesn't play any games outside of the simple Facebook games like Hay Day, Candy Crush, etc. So she doesn't need anything too powerful. She mainly needs one for playing those, FB, browsing, movies, music, and writing. The kid's will also be on it once in awhile, and I figured Mac OS would be an easy and safe thing for them to use. When I return to school for Comp Sci, I may end up bringing it with me when needed as well.

I'm wondering if theres any sort of compatibility or network options between a Windows & Apple based machine. Right now, I have our 2 computers networked to share all our movies, music and pictures, though it's mainly used to transfer movies and TV shows. Is this possible with two different OS's? Is there another laptop that can perform as well in this situation?

If anyone has similar experience, I would like to hear what you think. Sorry for the long post!

P.S. My main interest is in a refurbished MBP non retina for upgrade options.

Yea i would just get her a laptop. MBP and MBA are overpriced for the hardware as everyone knows. You can maybe get her a Dell XPS from Dell Outlet. They look pretty much the same. Currently they have a 25% coupon i think. But if she really likes Mac OS then you cant stop her lol.

As for the movie sharing and what not, I think its still possible to do it with a 3rd party program just a little of a hassle. Not sure on this though as i never tried this.

The price of even a decent refurbished MBP is a little over budget once the monitor and external KB/Mouse come into play, but we have an issue with sticking to a budget anyways. I guess the main thing is the sharing between Windows & OS X, but I'm sure there are ways to get by that easily even if I were to use one at school and at home.

Does Dell make good laptops? I have no experience with them in the past 10 years outside of the monitors. I do like Asus & Acer, I know we want to stay away from Sony as we both have had bad experiences with laptops, tvs and cameras. Our main concern is reliability, followed by decent performance and no bigger than 15".
