NIC problems

My Dell GX280 is not connecting me to the net. My Cat 5 cable connects between a

cable modem port and the NIC data port on the Dell. When the pc boots all looks well

except that the NIC icon indicates a problem.
The properties of my Broadcom Gigabit Controller indicates the "device is working

fine". Clicking on the NIC icon+more info+Support Tab and the "Repair" Button"

says it's going to renew the IP address" then I get a long wait and the error message

"could not finish repairing because it could not renew the IP address".

I reboot many times with the same results. I downloaded and installed the latest driver

for the Broadcom controller with the same results. And I rolled back the driver to the

original with the same results.

The Cat 5 cable is used with another pc nearby and it connects to the cable modem

port ok. The modem, cable and connectors are not the problem and both pcs run XP

ProSP3.

The XP in the GX280 thinks the NIC is working well but it won't connect to the

internet.

I connected a wireless NIC via a USB port to the GX280 and was able to connect and

do wireless internet work with it.

The reason I am working on this GX280 is because it stopped working because the

PSU was dead. It is my son-in-law's pc. I replaced the PSU and everyting is working

except the NIC data port. The PSU got fried because the machine was full of dust

which probably slowed down the fan and caused overheating.

Could the overheating have cause a component in the Broadcom controller to die?

If the Broadcom controller is faulty why does XP say the "Device is working

properly"?

Thanks for reading.
