New build, 50-95Mbps slower than other devices

I recently completed a new PC build. Everything is working great except my wireless connection, which I immediately noticed was significantly slower than my Macbook Pro. Using speedtest.net on my Macbook Pro, I was able to consistently stay just above 100Mbps DL / 20Mbps UL with stable speeds over multiple tests. On my new PC build, the results have come in anywhere from 3Mbps DL (!) to ~50Mbps with fluctuating speeds.

In addition, since my PC has been connected to the network, I've witnessed 3 incidents where my wireless network has simply dropped/vanished from the available list while I'm downloading something on my PC, requiring me to restart my router to get the network to appear again.

Both my desktop tower and Macbook Pro are sitting inches from each other, and the Airport Extreme is sitting about 10 feet away on the other side of the room. Full 5 bars, 100% signal strength and link quality.

Router: Airport Extreme Base Station
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-GD55
Wireless Adapter: Rosewill RNX-N180UBE

I've tried:

  • ■ Updating drivers for the motherboard (chipset, LAN, USB 3.0, etc.) and the Rosewill adapter itself
    ■ Installing AirPort Base Station Utility
    ■ Changing channel on router
    ■ Creating unprotected guest network and testing with that (same result)
    ■ Upgrading Airport Extreme firmware
Unfortunately I don't have an ethernet cable to directly connect via LAN, which might help confirm the issue is entirely wireless.

Any suggestions? If this causes me too much headache I'll just go out and buy a wireless bridge and ship this wireless adapter back.

Since you mentioned the AirPort Extreme base station is only 10 feet away, why not just buy a long ethernet cable to go around the room?

The Rosewill RNX-N180UBE is USB 2 and only has one transmit antenna. Your MacBook Pro is probably configured as 2x2 or 3x3.

Wired would still be the best way for speed and reliability.

For the moment wired is a last resort option (although I wholeheartedly agree with you in terms of speed/reliability). I will be moving my desk into an adjacent room soon, and the way my existing room is laid out would require me to run an ethernet cable across a fairly trafficked entranceway. I'm also a renter so that excludes a lot of more serious wiring/construction projects. At least for the moment I'm hoping to stick with wireless, even if it means picking up a new device. I was considering this dual band 3x3 adapter if my Rosewill one isn't cutting it.

Just downloaded and installed those drivers with no change. Bummer.
