Access NAS remotely via router

I’ve recently bought a NAS (Zyxel NSA325) and Hard Drives, running in RAID1. All is set up and working, the NAS is connected to my home router via Ethernet.

I can connect to the NAS using Polkast to stream data to my Android device, but I’d ideally like direct access to the files via an internet connection – any internet connection, on any computer, anywhere.

I’ve read a few things about configuring the router to allow remote access to a NAS, but can’t find the specific settings to do this or what I need to know / change.

Pleas can someone point me in the right direction?

Well I have never used that specific ZyXel brand, nor did you mention the router name/brand/model. But basic steps would be:

1.) Give the NAS a static IP on the network
2.) Find out what ports it needs forwarded from the router to be accessed from outside
3.) Make sure you can use a [strike]DynDNS[/strike] address or similar with the router/or nas (doubt you have a static IP, so DynDns is a pretty much a must)

And with that it should be done. Nas static IP, port forwarding, singup for [strike]free DynDns[/strike] no-ip, set that up in router and good to go.

hmm ill have to see if its able to be accessed over the wan, what router are you using?

Ah ok that's changed then. They used to have a free service (I used it for 2+ years) but I guess they just kept the ones who originally made an account free.

Ok after doing a bit more research I wouldn't recommend them anymore. Change of management and business policies I don't agree with http://www.noip.com/ try that.

if only we knew the router make, most home grade routers will not have the option for a dynamic dyn but you can puck up a used sonic wall for cheap, they are easy to setup and forward and have a good firewall. the old ones are ok, the new ones are great, much easier to setup
