I want to replace the HD on my MacBookPro with an SSD. Can I make a clone of the existing HD to the enclosed SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner and then install the SSD with the cloned hard drive directly in my computer and have it boot? Or do I need to go through the process of reinstalling the OS onto the blank SSD and then reinstalling any programs and files.

More about : replace ssd carbon copy cloner

It is generally better to do a fresh install when going from an HDD to an SSD. One main issue being of size. How large is the SSD, and how much data do you have on the current HDD?

(I know little to nothing of Mac operations)

New SSD would be 256G, and there is about 150G of data on existing HD

Doc,

Thanks for the reply. I do know that I can always do a clean install of the OS and then repopulate the drive with my various applications and data (which is what the Apple manual you linked to describes), but my specific question was whether I could just clone the existing HD to the new SSD (attached via firewire and an external enclosure), swap the drives and then boot up like nothing had ever changed. Do you have any ideas about that?

Try this http://blog.laptopmag.com/how-to-replace-your-macbook-p... in that they cloned it using apples software and didnt need to reinstall
EDIT nevermind they did reinstall its looking like you will have to as it uses the same process as CC and other installation softwares

I have a MacBook Pro and used SuperDuper! ( http://www.shirt-pocket.com/ ) to clone an HDD to an SSD and was able to do it successfully. So far the MacBook is running just fine. I've had no issues with any of the programs running as they should. I did backup the drive first just in case something went wrong as I had never used that software before.
