Need an SSD where I can force SATA150

Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) which has a known problem, where it fails to negotiate SATA speed correctly, I know some drives are able to auto-negotiate between 150 and 300, my Momentus XT is one of those, however this ultimately causes lockups. If spindown is enabled the machine locksup 3 or 4 times a day, with drive spindown disabled, I can stretch the lockups to one every 2 or 3 days, which is much more tolerable.

So I'd like to install an SSD where I can "force" SATA 150 with a jumper or other physical method, the first drive I looked at was the Crucial M500, but after talking to their support team, quickly established that this drive is incapable of forcing the protocol.

Can anyone point me at an SSD that could do what I need?

Regards

Tony

Because such a search also brings up a list of SSD's that auto-negotiate to SATA 1, and auto-negotiate is exactly what I want to avoid.

I wouldn't do that. I would buy a SATA 3 SSD even if it's only going to be connected to a SATA 1 port. The firmware on current generation SSDs are better than on 1st generation SSDs. Access times, 4K Random Read, and 4K Random Write will be better than a SATA 1 SSD.

Even though all SATA 3 SSDs are backwards compatible, buy an Intel SATA 3 SSD to ensure maximum compatibility with your SATA 1 motherboard.

It's not the "age" of the Mac that's at issue, my Mac will do SATA 300 too, my problem is with the auto-negotiation. I need to be able to "force" the speed of the SATA physically. It's a problem that is known specifically with the mid-2009 model.
