On my laptop i currently have only 4gb of ram and i am gonna buy 8gb of ram to replace it on my laptop but instead i was wondering if i could just combine them for 12gb's of ram. the ram i have now is DDR3 1600 MHz and the other ram im buying is DDR3 1600 MHz

From the Crucial website:

Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 32GB
Slots: 4

As a note, memory works in channels. Channels like to be balanced. Same speed and preferably same manufacturer. As a rule of thumb, its best to buy all the RAM all at once as a kit (8Gb kit, 16Gb kit, etc). So, if you mix the memory together and things do not work correctly check RAM first.

Most laptops have only two slots available for memory. Whether or not it will support 8Gb or not depends on the laptop itself. If you could give model and make of the laptop, I could give you a specific answer.

Windows 7 is 64bit isnt it? Coming from Alienware it probably is but here local stores selling laptops with 4gb memory usually meant 32bit os (max 4gb 32bit can handle despite other home premium physical limitations). But you may have just had the means of buying 4gb at the time. Just checking.

Btw, if you haven't upgraded your alienware yet, then maybe you can check the following links or just chuck as other users may find it useful.
Try "Crucial" or this site here. (Click on "crucial" or "here" for the links)

Hope that helps.
