To cut a long story short, i followed the steps here : http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed-100-working-guide/ so that i can install win 7 64 bit off my external HDD.

When i select to boot from the external drive however, i just get a blnking cursor for a second or two and then windows starts up as normal.

Anyone have any ideas what to do?

The DVD/USB tool does not detect my external drives so i am using the command prompt method instea.

ISO is the official win 7 ultimate 64 bit downloaded from the microsoft site.

I've got a theroy that something messed up with the drive (since i was able to boot from it before), but i'm not sure what. Anyone have a copy of bootrec.exe that they can upload so that i can troubleshoot the drive?

What exactly are you trying to do? Sounds like you have burned the windows 7 iso to your external hard drive and you are using that to hopefully go through the installation process of windows and install it where?

Also, what do you mean your dvd/usb tool does not detect your external hard drive?

If you boot into windows, can windows see your external hard drive?

I already copied the files over. That's not the problem.

When i try to boot from the external HDD to install windows, i just get a blinking cursor and the computer starts up windows as normal.

Also the windows DVD/USB tool does not work with external HDDs, only usb drives unfortunatley.

Solved by buying a USB drive...but it was still a pretty weird problem.

For burning isos to a usb drive, I would use universal usb installer.

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

Great, free, easy to use program. It works with external hard drives as well.
