PCIe X16 Gen 3.0

Will an XFX Radeon HD 7870 FX-787A-CDFC 2048MB PCIe X16 Gen 3.0 work in my ASUS CG5275 with one PCIe 1X slot? I would like to upgrade my GPU but I am not sure if the desktop is just too old? Thanks for the help!

  1. If that's the system a quick google found, it has a PCIe x16 slot, which is what you need.

    Is that your PC?

If yes, then no need to worry about that, since x16 3.0 is backward compatible, you can use HD 7870 with that motherboard.. :)

Thanks for the help. My system is the CG5275-AR0003. The problem that I have been having is in running certain games with higher graphics requirements. The computer will literally shutdown which I assume is due to higher temps generated due to the graphics. I ran a variety of tests using Speccy and Speedfan and found that the temp for the GPU was over 105 C. Am I correct that the problem is with the GPU? Any help her would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks!
  4. Yes, if it's too hot then your system will throttled down or even shut it down itself to prevent any damage.
You can try clean all components from dust, re-apply thermal paste, or even add more fan and change to bigger case... :)
  5. Ouch - it shouldn't be running that hot. Add extra fans or get a new case.

Could be the PSU, but less likely if the GPU is that hot.
  6. Make sure the fan is spinning. Clean the GPUs heatsink of any dust or fuzz.
