Windows 8 App Store and defender not working?

Windows defender discovered a virus on my system which I have since removed but now I cannot open defender without getting an error and the App Store or any of the "modern UI" apps will not load, saying it could be a network issue.

My network is fine and both the defender and App Store issues happened at the same time.

Anyone had anything similar?

Windows defender is not really a anti-virus I would be running some anti-virus and a malwarebytes scan.

Ye I know it's not great. It seems like my pc can't connect to any Microsoft service, I can't change my local account to a Microsoft account either

So download both Malwarebytes and Windows security essentials to a USB disk and move it over to your PC. Install and scan.

I wanted to ask if your browser can connect to the internet as a firewall can cause a problem like this.

Windows Defender includes Security Essentials in 8/8.1. Possibly a corrupt file in your OS.
First try System File Checker
Winkey plus 'X'
Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
Type sfc /scannow then Enter

It finds and fixes errors in Windows, but doesn't always report them. Run it and see if the fault disappears after re-booting your system
If corrupt files are found that can’t be fixed, try

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Re-run SFC

To view CBS Log

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Search C drive for sfcdetails.txt or navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and scroll down
