Very loud buzzing after 30 mins

Hi,
I am attempting to cure a problem with a fairly ancient AMD Athlon. I need to keep the system because it runs a special piece of software (with dongle) that only runs on Windows 95/98.
Anyway, the problem seems to be that after about 30 mins of normal operation the speaker in the case (I think) emits a very loud constant buzz. The noise doesnt stop, but the PC continues to function normally - however it is almost impossible to use the system with this awfull noise. I have cleaned both the Power-supply fan and the CPU fan, but the problem always re-occurs after about 30 mins.
I wondered if the CPU fan is failing, but thought that if the CPU temperature goes too high then the system will auto-switch off? It doesnt!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bob

Take the case off the next time you restart. Try to pinpoint where the Sound is coming from.

Possible areas, the Fans (especially the CPU fan), the Hard Drive, the Floppy Drive, the CD-ROM or the Power Supply Fan. If the sound is coming from your speakers, then your sound card may be going bad.

A random Restart is usually a CPU problem. Either the CPU is getting too hot (bad fan), the RAM is getting too hot, or other core portions of the Motherboard (again, fan related). If the CPU gets too hot, it will start frying the resistors that make up the CPU, then your computer will start ot come up with many odd and weird errors and other problems. By that time, the CPU is toast and you will need a new one.

There are Case monitors you can add to monitor your PC temperature, CPU Temp and fan speeds. This way you always know how hot your PC is running.

Thanks for the response. Yes I tried your suggestion of removing the case side panels and awaited the re-occurrence of the noise. Unfortunately it didn't re-occur for the very first time, BUT the CPU fan was erratically stopping and starting after about 45 mins, and the whole motherboard was vibrating plus a deep rumble noise from the CPU fan area. Therefore suspect the CPU cooling fan/bearings are 'shot' and that I should replace it immediately. Perhaps previously the CPU fan stopped working (after 30mins) and then the system sounded the alarm??
