Hello,

My Windows 7 PC has been working normally for a few weeks - but now suddenly I get a black screen whenever I use it it for a few minutes. It seems to power up normally and doesn't power down with the black screen.

Any ideas about what might cause this?

Thanks,

Lesley

First of all check power settings.
Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Power Options --> Change Power Saving Settings --> Edit Settings.
There check the settings to make sure it is not set to sleep after XX minutes.

Now try to get a monitor, either your old one or from a friend and plug it in, if problem gets solved after it, you know its a Monitor problem. If not, its a System problem. You might also like to disable hibernation and similar features completely.

Installing Malware Bytes and doing a full system scan is also good.

Thanks for your reply.

The screen isn't staying on long enough to check the power settings - but it also does this when I go into the BIOS so presumably that would rule that one out? I was also able to rule out a problem with the monitor.

The black screen also occurs when trying to fix or reinstall Windows.

Any other theories would be appreciated.

Oh then there is something else.

How are you re installing windows? try to do a complete fresh installation of windows directly from bios choosing the installation disc as primary boot device. It is a better idea than doing the same from My computer.

don't forget to format all drives if possible. that can make sure any virus, etc is not staying in there.
