Hi guys, after reading several threads here this community has inspired me to build my own gaming PC for the first time! Hopefully it is as easy as you all make it sound.

Approximate Purchase Date: next week
Budget Range: €600-€1,000 Euros After Shipping
System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming; graphics processing (GIMP); internet access; storage of digital files; word processing.
Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: I have a keyboard, mouse and monitor (1680x1050) already. I also have some old speakers and a sort of bass-box thingy (very old, but I think it works). I need everything else.
Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: amazon.uk, Scan.co.uk, www.custompc.ie, and any other that deliver to Ireland.
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Parts Preferences: Videocard GTX 650Ti Boost (2GB) or better [I selected the videocard after careful research on this forum - it seems to be the best value for money at my budget I think. I currently have a Geforce GTX 460 768 Ram which I think is pretty good too but perhaps getting dated] ; 1tb storage or more preferred.
Overclocking: I don't even know what that means - so no I think.
SLI or Crossfire: Ditto.
Your Monitor Resolution: 1680x1050

Additional Comments: I would like a quiet PC. I want a gaming rig that can play Civ V and Skyrim on highish settings, will last for the next five years and be able to play some modern games that have not even come out yet, and has 1tb of storage.
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: My existing gaming desktop (ixtreme X6620 UK Q8300) keeps turning itself off, so I presume it will not be around for very much longer.

I checked prices at www.custompc.ie. I put together the following components based on what I learned on these boards:

Videocard +NEW+Palit GeForce GTX 650Ti Boost (2GB GDDR5/PCI Express 3.0/980MHz - 1033MHz/6008MHZ) Cost €169.74
Motherboard ASUS P8H77-M Pro (Socket 1155/Intel H77/DDR3/S-ATA 600/Micro ATX) Cost €114.40

Memory (Hard) Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.12 Serial 3.5" Hard Drive ST1000DM003 (S-ATA/6Gb/s/64MB/7200 RPM) Cost €69.63
Power Supply Corsair 700W ATX 12v v2.3 Power Supply - Gaming Series GS700 - (Active PFC/80 PLUS Bronze) Cost €91.00
Cooling? Zalman CNPS9500A LED Heatsink/Fan OEM (Socket 1155/1156/1366/775/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2/940/939/754) Cost €28.88
Disc Drive Sony DVD Rewriter Black OEM Drive - AD-5280S-0B (S-ATA/DVDR: 24x/CD-R: 48x) Cost €17.98
Windows Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit English 1 Pack - WN7-00403 Cost €101.69
Case Zalman Z5 Black Midi Tower Case (ATX/M-ATX) Cost €41.46

Sub Total: €784.53
Delivery: €9.99
Vat @ 20%:€156.91
Total: €951.42

I have some questions:

- this all seems very expensive to me. Is it a rip-off? Is there anywhere obvious I can save money (eg the CPU in particular seems very pricey)?

- did I select the correct motherboard/memory/power supply/disc drive/case?

- should I buy windows 7 rather than windows 8?

- do I even need a cooling device?

- do I need to buy a soundcard and speakers, or can I just reuse my existing Dell bass-box-thingy and free speakers?

- do I need to buy anything else to get it working like wires and connectors?

Thanks for reading this and hopefully it all makes sense.

Honorable
1. go for a K series CPU only if wanna overclock
2. Motherboard: will do, again, B75 if not overclocking
Memory: Fine
PS: 600W should be enough even accounting for overclocking
Disk Drive: All good
Case: Fine
3. Windows 7 is a slightly bigger resource hog than Windows 8
4. u need a cooling device only and only if u're overclocking over 3.8 GHz
5. the Motherboard's onboard audio should be good enough, and u can reuse the old speakers
5. all the wires/connectors come bundled with the respective components

1. Yeah it's kind of a ripoff. Build you own and you'll get a far better GPU.

2. No - H77 won't allow you to overclock.

3. I'd personally get Windows 7, Windows 8 I am not a fan of.

4. Only if you plan to overclock.

5. No and yes.

6. No, that will all be included.

This would be a better use of € 1000:

Case: Corsair Carbide 300R - €72.66
PSU: XFX Pro Edition 550W - €62.44
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H - €126.81
CPU: 3.4GHz Intel Core i5-3570K - €126.81
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo - €32.55
RAM: Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz CL9 Vengeance Low Profile - €64.19
HD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM - €63.70
Optical: Lite On DVD Burner - €15.74
Video Card: Sapphire Vapor X 7950 - €325.63

Total: €1,001.79

It doesn't have OS but that will be a much better use of your budget.

Thanks jinayhvora and g-unit1111. Great advice.

g-unit, thank you very much for taking the trouble to do that - I can clearly see that this is much better value and I am getting a far superior rig for only a very small amount more than I was going to spend. I will take your advise and order exactly what you said!

The only thing I'm unsure about is Win7 vs Win8. They seem to be about the same price, but it seems to me that it would be wiser to get Win8 as Win7 will eventually become obsolete.

In any case, thank you very very much!

Heh, I had a coworker ask me what to get on a rig and he cancelled the order already placed and got what I told him to get.

As far as Win 7 vs 8 - I'm personally not a fan of it, I have it on my new laptop and my main desktop and I can't stand the metro interface which is why I generally recommend Windows 7. People still use Windows XP - that won't really matter.
