I am buying a custom computer from someone, and they put a HDD with no operating system in it. I need to buy one off amazon, but there are about 5 million one to choose from. i am going to be doing heavy gaming this summer, and am wondering which one i need, and how to install it. if anyone could tell me how to do it, i really need help! thanks, gamingcat :)

Solution

Windows 7 Home Premium.

If you never, ever plan on changing the motherboard, the OEM version will work. $91.
If you think you might, get the retail version. $170.

Since you stated that you would do some gaming, I'm assuming you're PC is good enough to install at least Windows Vista. Since it looks like you won't be needing the server capabilities of Windows 7 PRo or Ultimate, Home Premium would do just right. There are plenty around, just make sure you don't get the "Upgrade" version since you have nothing to upgrade from:

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-7-Home-Premium/dp/B002DHGMK0/ref=sr_1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1370132807&sr=1-1&keywords=windows+7+home+premium

If your computer has x64 architecture, I'd install the x64 version.

Of course you could just install Windows 8, bit I'm not of fan of that OS so I'll let someone else try to convince you to get that :)

Thanks! it seems like a good choice. i'll try it out, because i might need a motherboard that has an hdmi cable, and a few places for extra ram cards. once again thanks!
