Hey guys.

If you don't know some of the settings on Minecraft, some of the following is gibberish to you:

Recently I have fallen in love with a Minecraft mod... An INCREDIBLY unoptimized Minecraft mod. SEUS shaders is the mod in question; it basicly makes more advanced animations.

Due to the fact it is one of the most horribly coded mods in the modification community, my AMD 7850 (Ghz) is struggling to play at 60FPS. I can play at normal/fancy at 20-30FPS, and according to MSI Afterburner it is staying around 50-60% usage. I would think if I can force the GPU to put more of its' power into the game, the frame-rate will increase.

After being able to play at Extreme/Fancy at a solid (V-synced') 60FPS this is a bit of a disappointment too me, not the render distance, but the frame rate.

TL;DR: Is there any way I can force higher GPU usage too increase the frame-rate on a modded Minecraft client?

Thanks guys,

Qqqwxs

Sounds like you're being CPU-capped, which has nothing to do with your graphics card.

What's the rest of your system?

That is defiantly not a problem,

(This is a pre-built before I knew how to build)

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

Intel Core i7 2600 @ 3.40GHz
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology

8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)

Acer Aspire M3970 (CPU 1)

DELL E196FP (1280x1024@60Hz)
LHDN32V88AU (1366x768@66Hz)
AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series (7850 Ghz)

1863GB Western Digital WDC WD20EARX-22PASB0 (RAID)

Whats apparent to me is that the card is limited on some way, not that it isn't performing hard enough. The CPU isnt likely given its an i7, RAM is fine and the storage setup is unlikely.
I think its literally Minecraft or the mod itself that limiting performance, optimization goes a long way to better performance. Prime example is GTAIV, its a horrible PC port and it doesnt matter what you throw at it you get poor performance.

I honestly think it is due to that mod. My heavily overclocked 7950 doesn't run that mod real smooth.

EDIT: I also only get about 60-70% usage. I had always assumed its because its not a real GPU intensive game. Incredibly memory(RAM) inense instead

The mod is HORRIBLY unoptimized, it brings my frame-rate down 200%+, and I know that I will always get a large decrease, but I think I can escalate the average frames per second if I were to tell the card that it needs to work harder. As I said, the card is steady around 50-60% (Via MSI Afterburner) but I believe that if I can make the game more intensive, or send a command to the card to, as I said above, bump up the output.

Even if I do it and it doesn't help, I will know it is the mod and not just the card not delivering. Ideally, it could give 5-15 frames of extra performance, if so, I would be happy.

Thanks for the help guys :) .

I believe the RAMs' purpose is to store the chunks, and send them to the hard-drive, then clear the stored data when they are out. Correct me if I am wrong, but I tried to run the game (With the mod) with 256mb, 512mb, 1GB, and 2GB, and I got the most performance out of 512mb. The 256mb couldn't keep up, and the 1-2GB decreased my frames by another 10%.

As I stated in my previous post, Minecraft is mainly Ram intensive, followed by CPU, placing minimal strain on the GPU. The only real strain on the GPU is resolution at which you display it. Texture packs, render distance, etc. is dependent upon the other two. But you clearly won't have those issues. So it must be the mod being coded poorly. As 8GB of DDR3 Ram works fine at far render distance with a 64x64 texture pack.

It doesn't matter how hard the GPU runs if its not receiving information fast enough. If your getting 30FPS and the cards only at 60% usage, something else is causing the issue.
You could increase GPU load by adding in high resolution texture packs or something, you will get better visuals but not a higher FPS because its still that shader mod that's slowing things down.

Texture packs are still ram dependent. I an run a 64x64 pack with a 7950 just as well as I can on my laptop with a 5450 Mobility

I really does sound like a CPU limitation. Even an i7 can struggle if it is very unoptimized.
The thing is, minecraft is very poorly threaded.

Running at Multi-Core (Optifine Setting) the two cores max around 17% each in full game-play.

And, @ everyone else: looks like I will be going to plan B. I was going to do this anyway, but it looks kinda like a necessity now.

I will be posting a new thread soon explaining what I am doing for my birthday. :)
