Hi there

I am looking to upgrade me XFX HD6950 2GB for better game perfomance.

Some basic specs on my PC at the moment
i5 3570k (clocks up to 3.8GHz)
Asrock z77 Extreme 4 Motherboard
8GB DDR3 RAM
650W power supply
2x 1920x1080p monitors but I only have game running on 1 monitor (not dual screen).

Budget is not a issue. Right now I am looking at a 7970 GHz edition or a GTX 680.

Per this article, you need to go up at least three steps, which places you at the Nividia 670 and AMD 7950 range. But you say budget is not of high importance. I'd strongly recommend one of the new Nvidia cards.

The 770, which actually is a way overclocked 680 card. It runs $400 and has 2GB ram which is okay if you have a 1920X1080 monitor. Not a lot of future proofing, but a good buy.

The 780, which is a slightly detuned Titan. Runs about $650 and has 3GB ram. This will destroy any 680 or 7970GHz out there.

The Titan. Monster card with 6GB of ram. Only even starts to make sense if you have $1000 bucks and you have a very high graphics need, like a 2560X1600 display you want to max out at highest settings or a triple display.

Again, 770 best value, 780, a good compromise between massive graphics power and cost. The Titan for a bit more power at a lot more money.
