What is FireWire port on motherboard?

I have a msi z77-g45 gaming MOBO, I can't find that port
What is it for? Is it required?

It is used for connecting devices like handycams.

It is similar to USB I use, just a different specifications (IEEE1394). Firewire predates Usb and is faster than USB2. However USB 2 was more popular ad USB3 performance surpassed Firewire, Hense Firewire is premuch dieing out except for Older devices..
