the cd-rw is new by the way, never been used...i'm using the cd writing wizard...i've been burning cd's over the years then all of a sudden i can't do it...cd writing wizard would suggest "the disc in the drive is not writable or it is full"

How about remove upperfilter and lowerfilter?
Open Start> Regedit> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Remove the Upperfilter and Lowerfilter by rightclick and Delete. After that, restart your computer and try again.

thanks guanhao, but how will i know it is the upperfilter or lowerfilter?i can't find it with the process that you give me or rather it is not written there... also it says that "device is working properly".

The upper and lower filter fix usually only applies if the drive is not detected. Since your drive appears to be working correctly I would not use this fix as it involves editing the registry.
Writing to a CD-R is not the same as writing to a CD-RW as the CD-RW can be erased/formatted and written to again. One source of the message you are getting is the disc not being formatted. A CD-R does not need to be and cannot be formatted. A CD-RW can and probably should be formatted before writing to it for the first time.

It's worth the try, it won't damage your system anyway. just follow the steps one be one of that path.

First open regedit
open HKey_local_Machine Tree archy and keep going until the last part. when you select that 4D..... folder you will see upper or lower filters in there. i post screenshot just in case.

the only format action is to "erase this cd-rw"...i click that, the cd writing wizard appears that it is ready to erase the cd-rw disc in the drive. i click next but the wizard says it cannot finish erasing the disk and has stopped the process...if you would suggest to update the cd device driver, i already did that...but none of all the actions i did solve my problem...

but i do appreciate this thread...and your suggestions mr. kenrivers.

i tried it with another computer but the result is the same...it doesn't work. but it is fine with a cd-r not with a cd-rw.
