Hi all, so I have a Dell XPS 720 my friend gave me that I'm using as a Hackintosh. I'm considering using it as a home media server/HTPC but for whatever reason it came with a 1000w power supply and I'm concerned it will draw too much power. My current media server is a 2006 MacBook (no battery and no internal HD) with a Raspberry Pi as a HTPC, both of which of course draw hardly any power. Is a 1000w power supply going to draw too much power and run up my electricity bill? I understand that 1000w is not going to draw 1000w of power, but will it use up any more than say, a 400w-500w power supply?

This is too nice of a computer to just give away but I honestly don't know what to do with the thing.

Depends on the hardware. but i think if you adjust it through bios, it could do well.

It won't draw any more than an equally-efficient 500W PSU. You're OK.

It will draw more than your current setup though...

Just because it says it is 1000w power supply does not mean it is drawing 1000w all of the time from the wall socket. It depends on the hardware in the system.
And the combined wattage of the components inside the tower case.

Hi - To simplify - the PSU pulls from the wall only the power the components are demanding of it
at any point in time. The PSU's efficiency does affect how much power is being pulled from the wall.
The more efficient the unit, the less power it will draw from the wall.
