word.

I have a real frankenmachine, some of it is older than your mum, some of it is younger than a bieber fan

is there 1 free program that will measure the performance of my machine?

I don't think my quad core is firing on all 4 cylinders anymore and i'm pretty sure my 4870's are more misfire than crossfire.

things are so bad i'm considering getting an xbox one.

Cheers,
Chops

If your power supply is old, it is probably worn out. If your PSU is one of the parts older than "someone's mum" then you should consider replacing that first. It will cause almost every part to either malfunction or perform poorly if it is worn out.

As for your original question, there are benchmarking programs that will measure the performance of each component. One that tests almost every part individually is Passmark Performance test.

http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm

There are others, google "benchmark PC."

to be fair the psw is one of the newer parts, its a powercool modular 1kw from maplin.co.uk

isn't there something called 'faps' (lol) which measures in-game fps as well?

I am sure my graphics cards are not working together

Yes, but most offer you a 30-day trial or a demo version that only gives you a limited number of test options. Passmark is one that is a 30-day trial. And, really, how many times do you need to test your PC. They are looking to make money off of reviewers who write articles on new PC parts and test a lot of parts.
