Hello, all! In addition to my first build (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1665306/amd-fx8350-build.html) I am going to be building a smaller, much less powerful secondary system. The reason for this is that I want to run FSX over 2 computers (yes, it's possible, but this will be relegated to purely a weather/ATC generation system as it doesn't have the same grunt as the main pc has!) and have a secondary machine to do things such as surf the web, watch films and things like that. I want this machine to be as quiet as is possible and am currently configuring it as such:

  • MSI FM2-A75IA-E53 AMD FM2 Mini-ITX
AMD A6 5400K Black Edition (Dual Core 3.6GHz+HD7450D GFX)
    8GB LP Corsair RAM @ 1600MHz
CiT Mini ITX case with built in 300W PSU (should be fine for a 65W APU)
2.5" Seagate Momentus 250GB 7200rpm HDD (possibly an SSD for noise reasons)
Windows 8 (same as the main system)

As I said in the title, I'd like this system to have a passively cooled CPU (to keep the noise down) and I was wondering if any of you guys knew which one would be best for this task and small enough to fit into this already tight case, or whether or not I should abandon the passive cooling idea and just use the stock heatsink/fan combo... Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks, Daniel

Most passive coolers are massive, could you give me a link to your PC case, I would like to take a look at it and give a suggestion for passive cooling.

Also would you consider Intel? They have CPUs with TDP as low as 35W, lower the wattage, easier it is too cool passively.

Hi, Mattius. The case is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0064L71FQ/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
Not the best, I know but it is really to help me save some money! I realise that I'm probably going to have to underclock this CPU to aid the passive cooling, but I was wondering if there are any which would enable it to run at its stock speed.
Also, I would not consider intel in any way, I sit firmly in the AMD camp! To me, the AMD's work and even if some of them don't get similar performance to an equivalent intel CPU, they still do that job that I intend for them to do, not only that, the AMD integrated graphics are far superior to anything that intel (ivybridge/sandybridge, not tested haswell) has to offer.
