Is it worth getting a Haswell i7?

I'm building a mini itx gaming rig with a Bitfenix Prodigy. I will probably fit it with a GTX 770 and 16gb of ram. I'm just debating on whether or not to get an i5 or i7.

I know most games don't take advantage of 4 cores right now (and the general school of thought is to save money and buy an i5), but with the advent of an 8 core CPU in both next-gen consoles I'm wondering if it might be time to look at an i7 for gaming.

What do you think?

Games DO take advantage of 4 cores CPU, but NOT hyper-threading ( the i7s have 4 physical cores and 4 virtural cores from Hyper-threading that 99% of games can't use ). Therefor i5s give out higher price/performance ratio for gaming.

Thanks for the reply.

I know games CAN take advantage of 4 cores but truth be told, quite a few games don't. Even new games like Bioshock Infinite only really takes advantage of 2 cores, performance gains from dual to quad core are minimal or non-existent.

I'm just wondering whether or not when the consoles come out, that games developers might make use of the 8 cores on the console cpus and perhaps that might mean the 8 threads on an i7 will be utilised.

Right now most games only support 2 cores at max, but more and more games will be able to utilize 4 cores CPUs in the future. As for i7 : hyper threading ( HT ) have been out for many years ( since Pentium 4 lga775 platform ) and throughout those years, the list of games that support HT hasn't increased much. If future games could take advantage of 8 cores CPUs, then a FX 8xx0 would perform better than i7s.

Yep that's a good point. I7 CPUs HAVE been out for a long time and we're still waiting on them to be of any benefit in games. I guess it's hard to predict the future when it comes to pc gamers. After all we're a dying breed, aren't we? ;p

Not true. Where do you get that information? Intel cpus perform great gaming, the i5 is always a great choice but according to most modern benchmarks the 8350 is neck and neck with the 3570k in most games. Older games like Skyrim do better on the i5s/i7s but the FX 8300 series is right up there. Only a few fps off in most cases.

I was just rely into myself !! hehe. hmm. I have just reading forums and youtube videos. And I can't see anyone says that the i5 beaten by FX8350 in gaming. And I can prove it to myself. I am playing games all day long. And I can't rely on AMD Because the their problem on heating too much. And in gaming you need to put your system in cool face so that you have a better and reliable gaming performance performance.

I won't sacrifice the heat to get only an 8 cores CPU.

How ever. 8 cores can be use in the future games.

But remmember "FUTURE" is in future. ahaha it is not now :D

Nope. Some games use more than 4 cores now, Crysis 3, Battlefield 3, and in those cases there is no fps difference between the 8350 and any i5. Also the 8350 doesn't generate so much heat that it cant run. It does perfectly fine at stock settings with the stock cooler, I own one, I know. It just tends to generate more heat when overclocked due to the amount of vcore needed, that is why you purchase an aftermarket cooler.

Also, I never stated that the i5 was beaten by the 8350, but they are neck and neck. Please read everything before you post.

So to summarize, 8 cores are used in modern games, just not all of them. All newer gen games will use more cores though, so yes in the future as well as now the 8350 will be right up there and competitive with the i5 and i7. There is nothing to refute, everything I'm saying is true. The Intel cpus are great, but for less price you can get nearly the same performance in modern games.
