Is Haswell worth getting over Sandy?

Hey guys,

I am going to build a system from scratch some time this summer break and I am able to acquire a used 2550k from a friend for only £100 ($150). In addition to this, I will be getting a z77 mobo (probably a sabertooth z77).

Would it be worth getting a 4670k over this? If I do go for a Haswell chip, I would probably go for an MSI Mpower board or the cheaper z78 g43 board.

Would the extra 100 dollars be justified?

Keep in mind that I will mostly be playing games (BF4, Crysis 3, Metro last light, etc) and would be pairing it with a temporary 560 ti which is to be upgraded to a Maxwell gtx 860ti or 870 in the future.

Would I see a big enough improvement in gaming performance?

If I were to upgrade in the future, I would wait for the next line of intel cpus (5th gen?)

would the speed of the 2500k be able to keep up with modern games such as those listed above until the release of 5th gen intel core cpus?

More about : haswell worth sandy

you know how many people have doubts upgrading an i7 nehalem to Haswell? If you can find the 2500k for a decent price then go for it but, when you build a PC from scratch the personaly i would go with the latest arhitecture :)

Im thinking the same way as you, with a price of only 150 bucks for a 2550k and the new architecture of the 4670k for 100 bucks more, I'm still stuck between the two.

Then split the difference, spend $200 on a 3570k and be done with it.

No, hang onto your SB CPU. Haswell isn't that great.

Here's the review:

Not worth the money...higher power consumption, overclocks worse, doesn't improve anything for a gamer, and costs more money.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking
but when compared to a 2550k (or 2500k), what kind of improvements in estimated framerates would I be seeing with a 4670k over a 2500k in the games that I had listed? What about with games like Skyrim?

Well, IB was an improvement of about 2 FPS over SB, and Haswell is showing 1 FPS improvements over IB in Tom's Review...so $100 for 3 FPS...

Not worth it.

You will see almost no difference from a gaming perspective. The major difference from an end user perspective between the two CPU's is the built in GPU which you will not really be using anyhow. To your later question about will this last until 5th gen core CPU's, yes probably.

Scroll down until you see the games section:

With only a 10-15% difference in performance it is not worth it. The way I have always gone by unless you can see a real world improvement over 10% it is not worth it as anything 10% or less you will not see any gain for the money spent. I think that holds true for CPU's as well as GPU's. For some one on say a Core 2 Duo or such going from that to Haswell there would be a very good improvement and well worth the upgrade. In that case it would make more sense to by pass SB IB and go all of the way up to Haswell.
