Haswell or Wait for Broadwell?

I have an antique Bloomfield. Now, I have the urge to upgrade to a Haswell, since I am a gamer and the heat and electric bill is now unbearable. Any overclocking I do raises the temperature and since there's no AC in my room...

Problem is, if I upgrade, I probably won't be able to do another for a few years due to budget reasons. Is it worth it to wait for Broadwell based on the information we have now, or should I just get the Haswell and keep "Hassy" for a few years?

I am looking forward to an i5, as I am a game enthusiast at best, and an i7 won't be necessary.

Thank you all for advance.

How long have you already put off the upgrade? You missed the Sandy Bridge, you missed the Ivy Bridge. If you wait and miss the Haswell, then you might as well wait for what comes after the Broadwell too. If you have a reason for the upgrade at all, yes, do the Haswell now. It is the first of the newest sockets. So you will have an upgrade path down the road.

^ +1 , I agree totally you can get stuck waiting forever if you keep saying what about the next release is that supposed to be better? The thing is that you are ready now and you should be able to enjoy a new upgrade now and it's the perfect time because the Haswell was just released so the next won't be for 6 to 8 months and then it will only be incremental over Haswell so by doing it now gives you at minimum two years before you would have to start thinking of an upgrade.

You could also build a budget Ivy Bridge system and save yourself some money. If you won't be upgrading for 3 years or so, by that time Ivy will be dead, broadwell will be dead, skylake will be cycling out in favor of Skymont...or whatever comes after that.

Haswell isn't enough improvement over IB, and if you won't be upgrading soon there's no difference for you. You'll have to buy a new MB either way...additionally...the rumor is that Broadwell may be entirely BGA. Which means no sockets...that won't be an upgrade option if that's true.

I think my reply is very delayed, but i hope it would help you. The haswell is not a processor to be overclocked. they have the voltage regulator built inside so that can increase the temperature significantly.

Going for a IVY BRIDGE would be a wise decision, since its the first processor to have new transistor technology. Still IVY BRIDGE is bad to be overclocked comparing with the 2nd Generation. If you plan to wait just wait for the BROADWELL. Broadwell comes with a good punch. But i don't think you should wait for skylake. SKYLAKE will be a soldered chip to the motherboard. You will be left with only few choices. I my self waiting to plan what to do next. I might buy a Broadwell, if i am sure the SKYLAKE will be soldered to the board then i am going to go for AMDs.

Just i want to advice you here , try not to overclock. but go for good VGA and keep your room clean. Do use some good exhaust fans for the casing. Go for a larger casing too. You can control the temperature really well. Also look for a good air cooler for the processor. may be something from COOLERMASTER would be good.

Wish you luck.
