Do I have what I need for 120hz?

Solution

Not at all.

It's common misconception that 60FPS at 120Hz and 60FPS at 60Hz are the same, but they aren't. The effect is marginal, but noticable, the image will be free of tearing and noticeably faster in terms of how fast it responds. Besides, a 670 will still top 60FPS in alot of games, 80+ is really nice, and easily attainable in alot of titles, just not in stupid ones like...

It depends on the games you play. Don't expect to play Metro: Last Night anywhere near 100fps. But with games like CoD, LoL and some MMO's you can make full use of the 120Hz. You'll have to turn down the settings on most games to get more that 100fps

So with my card is it pointless to get a 120hz until I get like another 670 or a better card?

Not pointless, but you won't be experiencing the full benefits of a high refresh rate monitor while playing more demanding games, unless you reduce the settings.

Edit: As someone with both a 144hz and a 60hz monitor, I can attest to what cookybiscuit is talking about. It's subtle, but you can tell the difference.

Pointless if you want to play games on higher settings. 60fps is smooth and works for mostly everyone. 120fps is supposedly super smooth and supposedly reduces ghosting by a lot. Probably cuts it down by half compared to 60fps.

May I ask why you have a preference for 120hz?

Also worth mentioning that 120FPS isn't really that great. Its super smooth, but you stop noticing it after a while, you'll only pick up on it once you go back to 60FPS again. I use it for the 3D, really don't care that much for the higher framerates, 60FPS is totally fine.

It's only real use is in competitive FPS twitch stuff, if you aren't into that then just go with a 1440p display or something.

Thanks for all the answers, as to why I am interested it would be that I am just curious if it is worth it, I play mostly Battlefield 3 and would like to know if I can get more out of it. The hardware that I have (that matters):

Windows 7 64bit
8gb corsair xms ram (1600)
Intel i5 2500K 3.3ghz
Gigabyte GTX 670 2gb

I disagree, I must admit. I much prefer gaming at 144hz. That said, monitor choice is pretty much down to personal preference, so in the end it comes down to OP's taste.
