windows7 validation scam

i recently purchased a pc from a private owner who had built it themselves. i ran a windows update on it and i keep getting a pop up mess. saying i need to validate my copy of windows. the web site it refers to wants 120.00 dollars . i dont have that kind of money at the moment. any suggestions? is there any thing i can do? feeling scamed

Who do you think scammed you? The guy who built it or the website? If you think he used a pirate copy you can try taking it back. If its a local business you can report him and he should get in trouble. If the "web site" isn't windows.com then you might just have a virus on your computer. Running a good anti virus program should be able to fix it. (AVG, Aviria, MSE, etc.)

^ I agree with this sounding like a virus or malware of some sort. Run an antivirus program and Malwarebytes and it should at least identify the type of infection you have so you can find out specifically search for how to fix it.

Edit: Malwarebyes as well as the very good programs 4745454b mentioned above are all free.
