A10-5800k/6800k vs G1610 + HD7770. What's the point of high tier APUs?

Hi. I'm wondering what a better build for gaming would be, and moreso confused as to what the point of the higher tier APUs are as I look into things more.

I can't seem to find any point in using the high tier APUs for gaming (Isn't that what they're made for?... and how are they competing with Intel otherwise considering Intel is starting to price match them in the budget market as well?) The G1610 with an HD7770 would outclass it pretty heavily on most, if not all occasions, correct?

Anyway, specifically for Diablo III, what would be a better idea? A weaker processor with a very strong graphics card (for D3), or a stronger processor with a rather weak graphics card? Would a G1610 & HD7770 max out D3 with around 60FPS?

i3 3220 - $130
A10 5800k - $130
FX 4300 - $119
FX 4350 - $130

i3 and 5800k are pretty close at stock speeds. However, if you overclock the 5800k, it pulls ahead. FX 4300/4350 also good choices if you don't overclock the 5800k.

Passmark CPU scores, just for comparison, not a true showing of which is better ... but:

AMD A10-5800K APU 4695
Intel Core i3-3220 4230
Intel Celeron G1610 2609

I couldn't find any Richland (A10-6800) benchmarks, but it's fairly safe to assume it's slightly better than the 5800.

The higher tier APUs aren't marketed as a gaming chip.

It's an all in one solution, an HTPC chip, something that gives you enough CPU and GPU power without having to actually have the discrete GPU. AMD APU graphics >>>> Intel HD graphics. That's what they are for.

Also you could use the 7770 on the A10 too, so you're making kind of a skewed comparison.

I understand that, but then that skews the price difference heavily. So that doesn't really help. Trying to find a good halfway point. Maybe an a6 and a 7700? Or would a better celeron still beat the a6 at its own price point? Quad core llano vs same price tier celeron?

Basically yes. The K edition is unlocked and can therefore be OCed. This means that it's voltage can be increased which means it needs to be capable of handling that increase. The 740 will only ever run at that speed and voltage so its power requirements don't need the extra buffer.
