I keep reading that for a dual GPU set-up, the SLI way is better for reasons like latency, micro-stuttering and overall smoothness, even on Tom's review for dual GPU. The hardware performance and practical performance seem to greatly favour Nvidia, while AMD's, there's a massive gap between the two.

Is CFX that bad?

It's a driver problem afaik. I hope they fix it too.

Nope, it works fine for me.

There are some odd bugs with Crossfire in games such as Skyrim and Crysis 2. Many times these bugs can be avoided by making small adjustments or fixes, but Toms doesn't do this when they write reviews. Even their most recent review for the GeForce GTX 770 showed Crossfire cutting the Crysis2 FPS in half, which only happens if the in-game Crossfire fix isn't performed.

Nope it's not really that bad, Yes there are frame latency problems which are a driver problem that are being worked, on but you don't really notice them if you have high/decent frame rates in games

Compatability wise no problems for a long time with games, last game that was a problem was Skyrim when it took them ages to update the CFX profile for it

Crossfire isn't that bad
As Xfire is for AMD and SLI is for nvidia
Both methods are likely achieve the same result
Crossfire allow you to have different GPU to connect together but with the same chipset. Crossfire has 4 different rendering methods, however, both crossfire and SLI should achieve the similar result. :)

is there a problem with crossfire at the moment, my pc has lost all drivers and catalyst engine wont crossfire my 2 cards

CrossFire has some serious problems at the moment, but it's not as though they all effect everyone that uses it. That said, as someone presently wrestling with a problem with his CrossFire, I wouldn't recommend it until it's a bit stabler. It works out fine, usually, but why risk it when SLI is more reliable at the moment?
