Missing system file but can't run "Repair" option from CD

I have a PC that won't boot, it tells me "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt C:\windows\system32\config\system ". So my first thought was to boot from a Windows CD and run the repair option. But when I try that it gets about half way loaded and blue screens. The blue screen error says something about a hard drive or hard drive controller.

Is there any way I could slave the hard drive to another computer and just copy the missing files? Or run a repair on it that way? I have the equipment to hook it up as an external USB drive, I just am not sure what to do with it once I get it there. It's from a non-standard PC so I can't just stick the hard drive in another box and try to boot it to see if it's really the hard drive or some other component from the PC.

I'd really like to save the hard drive if I can, it has some software on it that is difficult to manage and even transferring the license from one machine to another costs us. Thanks for any advice!

Wow...that's a lot of info. I'm going to try running chkdsk first, I didn't even think about that. Then I'll try copying those files if that doesn't fix me - I assume that's what you were pointing me towards?
Thanks, I'll update my progress.

The System file you refer to is a m,ajor constituent part of teh Registry - Windows' big filing cabinet which determines how (and whether) your operating system can run. Use the Command promt from an XP CD (first Repair option) to navigate to the windows\system32\config folder using the syntax chdir c:\windows\system32\config then run the dir command to see if there is a recent version of the file System but with a different filename extension - perhaps SAV, BAK or OLD.

If there is, find the file System and rename it System.two ten rename the other one you found simply as System. Try a restart and see if that helped. It will leave you with Registry issues but it's better than reinstalling. Don't pick a backup of System that's over about six weeks old.
