My mother in law just retired so I am going to giver her my Dell. I am a photographer so I run Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom along with various photo plug-ins. I have been researching already built systems and know that I can get more bang for my buck by building it myself. I have never done this before, so I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I also have no preconceived ideas of CPUs, motherboards, etc. so I am an open to the best system for the price. Thanks for helping.

Approximate Purchase Date: Ready to start!

Budget Range: I would like to stay under $1000

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Photoshop, Lightroom.

Are you buying a monitor: No, I have a Dell U2410 1920x1200 and Dell ST2410 but the U2410 is my photo editing calibrated monitor.

Parts to Upgrade: Not going to upgrade, will be a new build.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes, most likely Windows 8 since I will have this unit for a few years.

Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com or any online retailer, looking for the best prices.

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Melbourne, Florida, USA

Parts Preferences: No preference, I am open to the best components I can get for the price.

Overclocking: Sure, if I can afford it and it will help.

SLI or Crossfire: Doesn't matter

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1200

Additional Comments: Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Giving my computer to my mother in law so it's time to upgrade

Include a list of any parts you have already selected with descriptively labeled links for parts. Please do not post only links.

Latest and most powerful Intel Core i5 CPU, 16GB of blazing fast DDR3-1600 RAM, blazing fast SSD for your OS and Photoshop, and a 1TB HDD for storage. The HD 7770 will provide you with a decent GPU for displaying graphics, and its all packed in a nice Corsair Case.

^^^ good system. Photoshop would run nicely on that. Photoshop doesn't have a lot of GPU acceleration but it does have some and you can enable it on AMD cards no problem and it does help speed up some filters, especially liquidfy and a few others.

Hello-

I'm thinking about copying your build for my Photoshop PC too! (disclaimer: I'm a complete noobie to building PCs. I'm just a wannabe.) Anyways, I also trade stocks (more as a hobby almost) and would like to be able to run at least 3 displays. Possibly even 4. I only need 1 display to be HD for my photo retouching (although 2 HD would be nice). I think this means I need another graphics card. Could I just buy a 2nd low end graphics card -- is that how it works?

May I ask how long it takes for your comp to boot photoshop? And it runs nicely when you have lightroom running, using photoshop, music & web at the same time?

As for the 3 or 4 displays, I don't know the answer to that. I'm sure someone else here will chime in on that.

It takes less than 5 seconds to boot photoshop now. I haven't timed it but it is super fast. I always have Photoshop, Lightroom and at least one web browser running with no issues at all. This build is very stable and I love it!
