Really quickly I have a friend whos son needs a new computer and the son really wants to learn to build his own. I am going to help him build it. Here is what I have for a system there are reasons for what I have picked.... 1 500 dollar max budget including os. 2 I chose a mobo with 4 dimm slot so it would be cheaper to upgrade in the future same with the 1155 socket.

You are very welcome. The discussion was pretty good. I also have an FX 6300 & am considering upgrading to an FX 8350 for a new gaming PC, as I need a new workstation PC. The FX 4300 is more then plenty for a MMO, as its tailored towards heavier games.

I tossed around the idea of th a10 but here is my logic on the i3. He was to build and improve the computer over time. If he starts with an a10 there is no upgrade path. To maybe an a10 6800 but there is not enough improvememt to make that worth while. Now an i3 with the 1155 socket, come birthday or christmas he gets a couple hundred bucks now he has an i5. Dont get me wrong the A10 build you listed is a great computer and have built 2 of them myself I just dont feel its a right fit for this situation.

Understood, but 1155 is a dead socket compared to FM2, and its overclockable compared to the i3, if anything, Id recommend the FX 4300 over the A10, as it has much more of an upgrade path.

Good point, but as for 1155 being a dead socket agreed but not as dead as fm1 or 775. But I can still find upgrades to my q6600 to this day compared to some of amds older sockets. There are many more options for longevity in 1155 at this point. There are 3 generations of cpus to pick from used on ebay/craigslist and new from retailers for years to come.

True, then again, the core 2 was always faster then AMDs K8 based CPUs, and most businesses are still running them, or AM3 Athlons / Phenoms. As for ebay, most of the i5s are from either 1366 or 1156 for the cheapest ones, and the newer variants are around $200 - $300 still.

Thank you for the great discussion.. I have enjoyed it... I think I am going to poke around an FX based build and see where that takes me. I do love my 6300. And a 4300 would be great start point for him as well and upgrade would be cheaper. Thank you again sir.
