If I am solely gaming, what would be a better choice, AMD FX-6300 or Intel i5-3570k?

Do you have a limited budget and/or have already acquired parts?

The 3570k hands down, 4670k if you want to be newer and have slightley newer instruction sets.

Comparing apples to apples help. The FX 6300 is priced at the i3 price point. The fair comparison is FX-8350 vs the i5 since they are both around the same price point. The FX-8350 will perform better for multi-threaded applications and games whereas the i5 performs better on single thread games and applications.

It all comes down to your useage.

Yeah but if you want high mutlithreaded performance the I7 is the better choice making intel the clear winner across the board

At a 50% price premium for marginally better performance.

Yeah but with the I7 you get the best multithreaded performance and single core performance you cant go wrong its all around amazing

I know many fx6300 owners that switched to an I5 and got an fps boost across the board plus a way higher minimum framerate

I do have a limited budget, but I can get an average i5 build around the same as a top FX-8350 build, or the FX-6300 on a super budget.

The only multi-threading solution from Intel I would recommend is the i7-3930k. The 3770K is often beaten by the FX-8350 in specific applications and is a very close performer in other and I don't see the value a 3770K would add at the premium it demands.

I see. If you can, get the 3570K it is definitely worth it.

The 4770k is out now so the 3770k will drop even more in its premium shortly

What games are you playing and what is your total budget? What are the other components in your build?

Intel generations seldom drop in price after a new release. Maybe 4-5 months down the line you may get a special promos off vendors clearing out inventory but you will not see Ivy's MSRP dropped by Intel.
