I have a HP EliteBook 8560p Notebook with a i7-2640M . I am wanting to update my RAM to increase performance. I opened the bottom of my notebook and found I currently have a single 4GB DDR3-1333 PC3-10600 memory stick.

I am not sure what to get in order to receive a better performance increase. Should I get a identical 4gb memory stick or add a 8gb stick?

I remember reading somewhere that I should not mix the stick sizes. Is this right?
I was also reading about my notebook Here.

I was looking at getting this: 8gb Corsair stick

I use multiple memory intensive programs an I currently idle at around 3gb.

I have a 64x bit system.

Before getting more RAM check to see if you have a 32 or 64 bit system. If 32, you will need to install a 64 bit Windows before upgrading.

You may as well get another 4 gig stick, will be cheaper and you really won't need more than 8 gig of RAM for anything.

Ok thanks I will look into it. I need to increase my ram, I use multiple memory intensive programs such as visual studios/photoshop/ and other various programs.

I currently idle at around 3gb.

Should I not add a 8gb one but a 4gb stick? Im not sure of the brand of my ram. There is only a number on my current ram, 621569-001
Your laptop's existing memory specification is 4GB DDR3-1333MHz 204pin Sodimm (Micron Brand). It is wise to go with the same speed i.e, 1333MHz and the latency (the current latency is CL9). But coming to the memory sizes, I suggest you to go with the 8GB memory module rather than 4GB. Because you will have to ditch the 4GB modules in the near future if you are to upgrade the memory. Since, you are using memory intensive softwares 12GB should come in handy. No, there is no such rule where in you should not have to mix the stick sizes unless your manufacturer asks you not to. Perhaps, whoever mentioned it might be referring it for the sake of enabling Dual channel. In the hindsight, you must know sometimes the dual channel will work if you match the speed and the CL latency regardless of mixing memory sizes.

Also if you like to match the Brand which is Micron (but you might have an HP sticker on it), then try this site Here!!

Good luck. adios :hihi:

If you are going by that x64 bit system in your screenshot, that does not mean the operating system is 64 bit. An easy way to tell is to look at your Program Files directory, do you have one or two of them? If only one, it's a 32 bit installation.

Thank you for the great answer, I think I will go with the 8gb memory from that site. What about mixing brands is that a bad idea?

I have two, one called Program Files and Program Files(x86). Is that what you mean?
I read on this site here that my elitebook is able to be upgraded up to 16gb of ram.

Yes, you can mix memory brands as long as the specification is right. But sometimes some brands (generally generic brands) may cause some instability but otherwise yeah it should run just fine. :star:
