So I just changed from a AMD Phenom to a Ivy Bridge i5k CPU. As stated in my title I have the MSI z77a-gd65 MOBO. I want to overclock the cpu but am learning that overclocking a i5 is not the same as the AMD I had last. When I over clocked the AMD and looked in the OS under computer I would see the new rate. With my new cpu I see 3.4ghz, 4ghz. Is this just showing me my base clock and new clock? Or am I doing something wrong? Also Im not sure how to go about overclocking with this MOBO. It looks like I have to go into OC GENIE 2 mode to do anything but thats confusing to me because I dont want to use OC GENIE I want to do it myself. Also Im not sure what settings to adjust. With the Phenom it was just Multiplier and voltage. Now there are all sorts of things that Im not sure what they do. So I guess to sum it all up if there is anybody out there with the same MOBO as me that could explane what settings to adjust and where to find them in the BIOS that would br great. Also where do I look in windows to see what the CPU is clocked at after Im doen in the BIOS.

Thanks for the help

you simply need to change the CPU ratio and let the baseclock at 100mhz (10000)

MSI are simple enough to just get the CPU multiplier and the Vcore without any tweak other than XMP for the ram when you go for mild OC (4.5-4.6ghz)

Don't forget to disable EIST, Turbo Boost and C1E for better results too !!

that should be enough to do 4.5 4.6ghz easily but don't pass the 1.35V Vcore as Ivy heat a lot and pass that, most cooler will fail to keep the cpu cool enough (about 80 Celsisus max for 24/7 use) Also most won't push the Vcore at 1.4V even with liquid cooling...

PS: i expect that you have a good CPU cooler... If you have the shitty intel one, DON'T OC AT ALL.

Yeah I have the Havik 140 duel 140mm cooler set up as push pull. Thanks for the perimeters. Now I just have to figure out what to do in the BIOS as the manual is not much help and there does not seem to be much in the way of guides when it comes to my MOBO.
