I'm trying to upgrade my ASUS system from XP Pro 32bit to Windows 7 64bit. I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and everything checked out okay except for a warning that my system would not support the Windows Aero graphics capability. When I insert the Windows 7 64-bit disc, I get an error message saying my system is not compatible. Any ideas on the steps I should take to figure out what is not compatible would be appreciated. I also tried formatting the HD and doing a clean install of the 64bit version. I selected "Boot from CD". The system just hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen.

You can't "upgrade" your current XP installation to Win7, nor can you "upgrade" from a 32bit Windows OS to a 64bit Windows OS. The licensing is fine(aka you can use an upgrade license for Win7), but there is no compatibility from XP to Win7. You will have to backup any important data, boot from the CD, wipe the HDD (aka delete XP completely), and perform a clean install of Win7.

If you purchased a OEM license of Win7, you could partition out part of the HDD and have a dual-boot XP/Win7 box.

As far as the hang on Win7 load up screen, this is common when the CD/DVD drive is a bit older. Win7 doesn't carry all the drivers that XP used to have. You may have to use a temp USB CD/DVD drive to get it installed then track down older drivers for your optical drive.

Thanks for the suggestions. I contacted ASUS and they stated the K8 architecture boards do not support Windows 7 officially. I had already installed Windows 7 Home (32-bit) on this machine and it worked fine. However, it was only using one of the processors so it ran slower. I then decided to reinstall XP Professional for now.

I'm going to try the new CD/DVD Drive idea and will let you know.
