i'm ordering a motherboard that says it supports CPUs of sockets AM3, AM2+ and AM2. i know with a regular AM2+ board a BIOS update is needed to be able to use an AM3 CPU, but in the case of this board, do i still need one? or will it take an AM3 CPU no problem?

Do you currently have both these parts? Just the CPU, or just the motherboard? You shouldn't have to update the bios if it states it supports those on the box. But if you haven't bought the motherboard yet and you currently have that CPU look into an AM3/AM3+ motherboard so you can upgrade in the future.

newegg's description says that it supports all three sockets. i do not have either part, because i don't currently have the money on hand and i wanted to make sure i wasn't getting the wrong board/CPU pairing.

If you have not bought either part I would definitely go with a AM3/AM3+ board because you can still use the 965 if that is for sure the CPU you want to go with and leaves you the opportunity to upgrade the CPU to one of the newer ones in the future. Also you shouldn't have to worry about updating the bios if you go that route.
