Hello, I am looking to upgrade my Phenom II X6 1090 to an FX-8350. I think that should breathe some life into my 2.5 year old system and remove any bottlenecks from by geforce GTX 680. My motherboard is a rev 1 Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5. I have already checked that the 8350 is compatible with my motherboard. I plan to flash to the latest firmware and clear the CMOS.

I have read elsewhere that generally speaking, swapping out CPUs withough changing any other components should be straightforward. I am wondering if there might be something special in my case because I will be going from AM3 to AM3+.

I am using Windows 8 Pro 64bit. Do you think the OS might have issues or require re-activation?

Any opinions on the performance jump from the 1090 to the 8350? I'm mostly looking at general gaming, like bioshock infinite, starcraft 2, and dark souls.

Thanks!

It should work fine. Also, gaming performance will increase by only a tiny bit for the time being, but the difference will be more evident in the long run.

Thank you! Is the expected long run difference because of the extra 2 cores, or because of some of the technology improvements in the 8350 core? I have to say, the more benchmarks I look at, the less enthused I feel about this upgrade. The Toms Hardware benchmarks show many of the improvements as meh (sorry I'm trying to post a link to it but it appears some of the URL is misinterpreted by the forum), even with the core clock speed increase. Was bulldozer that much of a bust?
