What can I buy to increase my FPS in Guild Wars 2?

Currently I get absolutely horrible FPS in WvW zerg fights in GW2. I have around £150-200 to spend on upgrading my PC. My first instinct would be to get a new graphics card (something like GTX 660,) but apparently MMOs are more CPU intensive. However, with my rather meagre budget, the cost of a new processor AND motherboard makes it seem like anything I can get really wouldn't be worth it.

Current specs:
AMD Athlon II X4 640
ASUSTeK M4A78LT-M-LE
GeForce GTS 450
8GB DDR3

Can anyone give any advice on what would be the best upgrade to see significant fps increases?

The easiest upgrade would be the GPU. Pick up a GTX 660 or HD 7870.

Also, overclocking the CPU would help:

well I play GW2 and yes Zerg vs zergs eats fps and lag. First thing if you haven't is play around with the WvW model graphic setting you can turn down that to increase frame rates and it will only affect WvW so you can run better graphics when your outside of WvW (not sure if it affect spvp).

The cards I would suggest are 650 ti boost, 660 GTX or at the topend 7870 XT (like the club3d joker). The make sure its a 650 ti boost edition they seem to be selling for about $140 on amazon uk while the topend 7870xt are selling for about $205. If possible it maybe worth it to buy the 650 ti boost for $140 then save up another 30 and pickup an AMD 6300 that would help more than just a GPU alone.

However it will not get rid of the lag problem with skills so when its 40+ vs 40+

I currently play on the absolute lowest settings, and I still get 5fps in zerg situations. >_<

I am just concerned that my CPU would bottleneck me even if I did get a new graphics card, what are your thoughts on this?

I severely doubt a bottleneck. The card you will buy 660 or the ATi equivalent are not that demanding and powerful to cause the CPU to lag behind. Obviously upgrading the CPU/GPU would be the best bet but if not possible go for the videocard upgrade. Worst come to worst if you aren't getting the frames you should be just return the card.

While MMO tend to be more CPU heavy due to client side calculations, you still render all the charactor models you see in WvW and as you know it can easy by 50v 50 for the boarder land map even 50v 50 v50 if your talking about EBG keep attempts. So GPU first then CPU later, that true in your case and probably about 75% or more in general.

If you had a better GPU your system performance would be similar to mine so maybe my experience could help ....

As you can see from my sig I also have an Athlon 3ghz stock but mine is OC'ed to 3.4ghz so were not that far apart but its our GPU's where we differ greatly, check this list, see where mine is (HD 7850) and then go way down to where yours is ......

http://www.hwcompare.com/

I get over 66fps on Heaven benchmark and that's on Ultra setting, I get 75fps on High and Oc'ed as much as 86fps.

So imo as a similar system bar the GPU I'd go firmly with the general consensus of hitting up a top GPU, my 7850 was only £135 and can OC past a stock 7870 but get whatever's the best you can afford.

To answer your bottle neck query, no my Athlon doesn't bottle neck the 7850.

everyone on here suggests gpu upgrade which is all good and fine but i would suggest upgrading the cpu and gpu when possible push your budget a bit higher

get the max supported processor for your motherboard the phenom x 6 its faster then the althon by 10 to 15 percent especially when it turbos

recipe if you have os disc of windows 7 and key then go for this its cheap and will by far beat the crap out of your old rig you could also just get motherboard and os and gpu then upgrade processor later max support it the board supports is 95w but since the fx 6300 is the best gaming gpu from amd in terms of per watt performance is why i have chosen this board in my suggestion
