I'm putting together an OpenElec based HTPC from an old computer that would otherwise be tossed on the scrapheap.

This box will only be used for playback, mostly of 1080p h.264 video. There will no gaming. Just videos and the OpenElec interface.

I've got the following parts (including some backups if certain components don't work):

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (LGA775). Backup: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300

Motherboard: Foxconn M7PMX-M. Backup: ASRrock G41C-GS

Boot Drive: Gonna use a tiny 8GB usb drive, since it's only running OpenElec. Alternative: Might get a cheap 8-16 GB SSD.

Storage Drive: Ripping the HDD out of a Seagate 2TB desktop external. It's a green drive, which I figure is fine for something that's mostly sitting on standby until someone decides to watch a film.

The only component left is a video card. I have an old GeForce GT 9800, but if that doesn't cut the mustard I'm willing to spend up to $50 on a replacement.

What would you recommend?

I recommend you go for a cheap SAPPHIRE HD card that would enable 730p/1080P and you could probably get one without a fan so completely noise free. You dont ened anything beefy if you are just running OpenElec....
