Hello guys,

I was wondering if anyone has faced this kind of issue:

My Palit GTX 580's driver crashed constantly even on desktop and when modeling/rendering in 3ds max and i immediately started the basic troubleshooting with it. What didn't work:

1) Reversing driver versions
2) Upping the voltage
3) Disabling flash hardware acceleration
4) Uninstalling realtek sound driver
5) Going to nvidia control panel and setting Vertical sync to OFF and Power Management to "Prefer maximum performance"
6) In nvidia control panel i also changed the Use my preference emphasizing "Balanced" instead of the default "Quality".

What DID work:

1) Flipping the case over to its side :)

Now, what can be causing this issue? I replaced the original thermal paste and i can't remember the driver crashing prior to that. But recently i opened the vga cooler again and everything seems well assembled.

Another thing at the time of the crashes was that the retention clip of my pcie #1 slot was broken and first i thought it was from that but when i moved it to the #2 slot (which has no problems with the retention clip) the problem (that at first seemed to go away) returned the next day. Only flipping the case on its side solves the issue for now.

That is weird, how did you figure out to lay it over. I'm thinking power supply or the power connector wires.

Because when the driver crashed, if i slapped the case the freeze would go away for a few seconds :)  The "flipping the case" solution was a shot in the dark.

It can also be the pci power connectors as you said because i replaced the GTX580 for a HD5450 (doesn't use the power connectors) which i had laying at home and i had no problems whatsoever with drivers crashing. BUT, in the past this workstation had installed a GTX 590 with the same power supply (Antec 650W Truepower) with no such issues. Will have to troubleshoot that further when i get home.

Are your temps normal? It could be that flipping the case allowed increased airflow and thus allowed to card to keep cool.

Yap, temps are fine Optimus_Toaster. 60ºC idle and 65ºC modeling. I don't game in this workstation.

1. Uninstall nvidia drivers from control panel
2. Reboot
3 . Uninstall again any nvidia driver that still remains, check control panel
4. Reboot.
5. Run driver sweeper to clean up any nvidia related drivers (you should do this in a 1024x800 default resolution in windows without any graphic driver configured whatsoever if previous steps were successful)
6. Reboot
7. Install WHQL 314.22 CUSTOME MODE select only drievr and physx, DO NOT INSTAL HD DRIVER nor 3D nor nvidia update
8. Reboot and check

You do any OC either on RAM or CPU?

IF so, make previous steps again with stock clocks on everything.

If issue remains, check the GPU on another system and see how it goes.

Install 314.xx drivers and remove all sticks of ram, install only 1 stick of ram and test. If fails try with another stick (1 at a time) to clear out any ram issue.

Other than that dont see it unless u test gpu in another machine to confirm gpu is all good.

Will have to find the time between work to test it on another computer. I'm almost certain it's not a ram issue because i tested the same rig with a HD5450 and had no problems at all. I'll reply with news when i have them :)  Thanks all!

Well, driver started crashing again. I'm out of ideas. It's hard to believe the PSU 12v power connectors being the culprit because as i previously stated this very same workstation had the GTX590 with no problems whatsoever.

I even tried the bitmining trojan fix but malwarebytes didn't found anything in that regard.

Oddly enough it crashes when doing CPU intensive tasks like finishing a 3d rendering in vray (3ds max) when the gtx580 remains idle. Replacing the graphics card for a HD5450 solves all issues. My GTX580 is bad/unstable right?

I'm trying to crash it and see if debugging the minidump will give me more detailed info.

EDIT:

Forgot to tell you that i get 124 STOP errors BSOD.

I was able to crash it once again and the BSOD was a BCCCODE 9c. The minidump says:

BugCheck 9C, {0, fffff88003339d70, 0, 0}

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for intelppm.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for intelppm.sys
Probably caused by : intelppm.sys ( intelppm+39c2 )

Followup: MachineOwner

Going to google about this.

I have a similar problem. Must it be driver version 314.22 specifically? Is this a particularly good driver?
