I am not a techie so forgive any lack of clarity here. What I though was my graphics card, died. Blue and green flashes of colour after five minutes use of the computer. Safe mode ran fine but anything else ten minutes nvidia would say it had crashed, the disco of lights began and then the screen went black and we would begin again. New graphics card arrives I insert and get so signal/black screen. After half an hour I revert to my old card just to see if it's something else gone wrong. Now I am getting a black screen with lines of aa aaa aaaa with hyphons above them and a message saying select proper boot device.

If at the end of this anybody knows what I've managed to balls up please let me know as I am lost now.

P.s. I also get blue dots on the boot screen when using my old card

Old card is nvidia 8800gs
New card 8800gt
Asus motherboard no idea past that.

Thank you for your consideration of someone who does not know what the heck he is doing.

Mike

Okay, so lemme see if I can figure this out a little better.

The blue and green flashes are on the monitor, right? Not lights on the motherboard or graphics card?

It sounds like possibly you just had corrupted drivers, and an old enough system that it's not taking to a newer card well.

Go into safe mode, uninstall your graphics drivers for the old card, and install the newest (compatible with your operating system) drivers they have.

Yes the flashes were on screen, like lego blocks.

I cant get to safe mode, with the old card installed in get a black screen with dozens of lines of aaaaa all with accents above them. Over the top of this a message appears saying please select correct boot device.

using the new graphics card I get no signal/black screen.

I tried updating my drivers before installing new card incase it was a driver fault and not a bad graphics card, this didnt fix the issue of locking up, green blue blocks and ultimately, crashing so I installed the new card and now cant even get as far as selecting safe mode.

Thank you for your reply,
Mike
